A global perspective on equity and community

Te Whare W膩nanga o Waitaha | 蘑菇视频在线观看 (UC) Tumu Whakarae | Vice-Chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey shares her perspective on equity initiatives underway at UC, along with the role that international partnerships have played in driving momentum, and the importance of equity and community in higher education. 听

HOW TO APPLY

鈥淚 think institutions of higher learning, and particularly publicly funded or public institutions, have a responsibility to community,鈥 Professor De la Rey says. 听

Since 2020, UC has run a student success programme called Kia Angitu, that focuses on the first-year experience and provides supportive programmes to help students succeed based off a data-driven approach. 听

In 2022, UC hosted the T奴whitia! Transforming Tertiary symposium focused on the systemic changes needed to reduce barriers to success for historically marginalised learners. The success of this called for a second symposium to be held in 2023 by Te W膩nanga o Aotearoa, an Indigenous tertiary education provider. 听

This equity-centred approach impacts far beyond campus, Professor De la Rey says, 鈥渨e know that an investment in a university education has a positive impact on the whole of society.鈥 听
